This post is long overdue, but it’s taken me some

This post is long overdue, but it’s taken me some time to process and recover from the emotions of that day.

On June 28, 2025, we honored the life of mi abuelo, my hero, Josep Cubiló i Saurina, in his hometown of La Pobla De Segur in Catalunya, Spain. The town council organized a commemorative ceremony in his honor, 80 years after his release from the Mauthausen concentration camp during World War II.

The short of it is: his political views and ethnic background made him a prime enemy of the Reich. After being captured as a militiaman fighting for freedom, he was deported to Austria and enslaved, enduring nearly 5 years of forced labor, starvation, and torture at the hands of the N a zi. He barely made it out alive - when most didn't - forever scarred, both physically and mentally. Talk about survival.

So, on 6/28/25, this happened. What a beautiful tribute. The love and effort put into honoring my grandpa - by complete strangers no less - was profundly moving.

They spent hours recounting his story in great detail. Along with the reveal of a commemorative plaque, they laid a Stolpersteine (a brass-covered cobblestone) engraved with his name at the threshold of the house he grew up in. A stone of remembrance, anchoring his story to the very ground he once walked, so that his memory can never be erased (as once intended by the Nazi) and his legacy never forgotten.

They gathered the last of us, his living relatives and traced our family tree back through generations. I mean... 🥹

I can't find the words to express my gratitude to @josep_calvetb , the historian who poured years of dedication into this, @monsito587 , Regidor de Cultura, his incredible team, the city of La Pobla, and all the government officials (mentioned in the comments) for making this day possible. And to the hundreds of people who showed up... gràcies.

Mi abuelo was a force of nature and an extraordinary human being. I am so proud and so humbled to have his blood running through my veins. His story is one that must continue to be told, so I'm making it my mission to, someday, tell it the best way I know how. 🎬❤️
