Today we celebrate mi abuelo, Jose Cubiló Saurina

Today we celebrate mi abuelo, Jose Cubiló Saurina, born in La Pobla de Segur, Catalonia Spain, on 4/20/1920. This force of nature survived almost 5 years at the Mauthausen concentration camp during World War II as a political prisoner. On May 5, 1945 he was liberated by the American 11th Armored Division. He was one of 200 Spaniards - out of the 7,300 enslaved in Mauthausen - to make it out alive.

He sadly succumbed to his multiple injuries before I was born, but the Stolperstein made in his honor, as well as the numerous articles written about him, have helped me appreciate the horrors he survived. So today, I want to honor him - along with the 95,000 who died at Mauthausen and the millions who have fallen victim to the Nazi genocide - by sharing a bit of his story with you.

How did he get there? He fought alongside 7,300 Spaniards against Francisco Franco and his Italian and German backers in the Spanish Revolution and Civil War, before crossing the border to join the French Resistance in 1939. All these fighters were then seized from internment camps during the German invasion and incarcerated at Mauthausen, Austria.

Mauthausen was "one of the worst" concentration camps (not used lightly), with the harshest imprisonment conditions and the highest mortality. It was classified “Grade III”, where the most “incorrigible political enemies of the Reich” were sent to be exterminated, often through exhaustion by grueling forced labor. The SS called it "Knochenmühle" or the "bone grinder".

For 52 months, he was submitted to agonizing and inhumane torture practices, including (but not limited to) climbing 186 steps, the infamous "Stairs of Death", while carrying 100lbs blocks of granite on his back. Exhausted prisoners would often collapse and drop their load on top of those following, creating a horrific domino effect. Another practice: camp physician Hermann Richter would surgically remove significant organs from living prisoners solely in order to determine how long they could survive without them. And so much more.

Despite the horrors he endured, mi abuelo was the most loving, kind and caring man. You will always be my hero 🤍

I was wondering how this all started... There is in fact a deeper message behind the challenge, but it's been lost in translation.

Turns out, the movement started in Turkey, to stand up against the rise of femicide and violence against women.

The B&W photo concept allegedly symbolizes that your photo could be the next one printed in a newspaper - 'Another woman murdered'.

Sure, posting a picture doesn't do much, but it's a start. Having that conversation and raising awareness is the first step to helping those women DEMAND modern rights.

I love to see us women empowering each other right now, it's beautiful. Ladies (and gentlemen) please help me bring the focus back on those who don't have the same rights as we do. 🤍

In 2020, we should count our blessings more often. Here, I'll start:

1. My work wife. So thankful for this talented & gorgeous creature. Making movies with her has been so rewarding that I can't imagine not doing it for the rest of my life. When there's love involved it's not work anymore, it's art.
2. My other half - literally: He's too tall to fit in selfies that involve me but the size of his heart matches the rest*. (*insert dirty joke here). He's been lifting me up for over 9 years. I don't know what I would do without him by my side.
3. My work wife #2: This lovely human has put her faith in us and I couldn't be more grateful for that, and for her. She has a way of making me tear up every time she gives me a compliment - and compliments usually make me very uncomfortable. How do you do that?

That's not all but it's a start. Who wants to play? 😏

On the set of #Marmalade I found the coat check to be quite fitting. The sign "Sorry Absolutely No Guest List After 11pm" paired with my usual "Do-Not-Disturb-Resting-B*tch-Face" came in handy (mainly to keep the crew from stealing my chocolate cake), and so did the condoms on display.
